Red Ragtops are fun!

THURSDAY – AUGUST 18

Set your coordinates for Wisconsin’s Capital City, the headquarters for this sixth running of the OpenAir Classic! You’ll find no better car crowd out in the sun than the grateful untopped legion headed for the Holiday Inn & Suites on Madison’s west side, just off the Beltline Highway 12 & 14, right next to friendly Middleton.

Bring your camera to get some photos of this awesome collection of ragtop beauty. Come in and head for the OAC Welcome and Registration Room. Sign in for your registration kit, credentials and car number. Check out the area guides, try on your official wear and say hello to your road-runner friends. Take a cruise to the Capitol Square, across the University, to the zoo or along John Nolan Drive to see some great views. Shop State Street, Middleton’s Greenway Station or West Town Mall. Meet old and new touring enthusiasts from across the country, compare cars, tell tales and get ready to hit the road! Tonight we’ll enjoy delicious “Classic Cruisers Cuisine” at the Rendezvous Buffet at the Holiday Inn & Suites.

After dinner gather for a jump-start tour briefing at the Driver’s Meeting. Sleep tight but set two alarms because tomorrow you’ll want to be wide awake as you head for the hills and drive yourself happy!

FRIDAY – AUGUST 19

Yippie! – it’s up early, grab a coffee or breakfast and try taking a deep breath. Control your excitement, calm down your navigator and take the short drive to the starting grid. A full day of super cruising, the OAC Putting Contest, the Passport Panic Game and incredible checkpoints lie ahead: gourmet cheese, award winning wine, delightful shops, curious communities, wayside attractions and plenty of “make-those -navigators -holler” route twists and turns.

We’ll see historic places, great architecture, art and calendar views of rural Wisconsin. Up in the sky, sun, Georgia O’Keefey Clouds (yes, she grew up near here) Eagles, maybe geese, mallards and song birds. At ground level watch for white-tails, various varmints and gobblers.

Your GPS may act confused. Unplug it and have your crew re-read the directions. Ignore the questionable colorful phraseology of your navigator. We’ll be on paved roads, but most are way off the usual route. If you get to the Mississippi River, turn back -you might have last year’s instructions!

Plan to go to dinner with friends back in Madison. Check the OAC dining guide for ideas. This is truly a great city for eaters. From burger joints to vegan wonders, classic supper clubs to Top-Chef Cutting Edge – and yes, Pizza Palaces.

SATURDAY – AUGUST  20

Today we’ll cruise Capital to Capital through some of the finest Wisconsin Territory - but first the OAC LeMans breakfast! Gather at your appointed hour to eat, get today’s Top Secret route maps and Dagnab Drifter! game instructions.

You’ll see one of the nation’s best Farm Markets, a Frank Lloyd Wright Masterpiece, sip wine, chew cheese, admire art and cruise roads made to please convertible drivers! Visit exciting checkpoints, see beautiful country vistas and wind up where Wisconsin Territory was born 175 years ago, Mineral Point. The miners are gone and now it’s become a popular artist enclave, but the place looks a lot like it did when they dug lead and zinc out of these hills.

Today we’ll have a Grand Territorial Concours, vote for favorite cars and get livelyed -up at a special performance at the exquisitely restored Mineral Point Opera House. We’ll crown the OAC Putting Champ before we head out. Tonight dine in Point, on the way back, or in the heart of “64 Square Miles Surrounded by Reality.”

SUNDAY – AUGUST 21

If you celebrated long last night, you can catch a couple extra winks this morning - but don’t be late for the Never-Topped big Sunday Finale’ This is Fun and Prizes Day! We’ll wind up the celebration of our 6th tour this morning at the Holiday Inn & Suites. A light muffin and coffee wake-up is our tradition and we’ll have plenty of awards and prizes.

We’ll have the popular “Bucket Drawings,” Referral Prize, Game Prizes, Grand Prize Drawing, Concourse winners, Putter Awards and the (too soon!) – fond farewells. Things wrap up around Noon. You may want to explore more of Madison so check your City Guide. The hotels offer OAC special rates for a Sunday Stay. Many will drop tops, cruise a little more on their own and then head home.

Mark your calendars for the 2012 OpenAir Conditioner at the Concourse Hotel & Governor’s Club (late January –date to be announced in fall) where we’ll reveal the destination and headquarter hotels for OAC VII. Remember, time flies when you’re riding topless! Mark it down OpenAir Classic VII, August 16-19, 2012!
